As a bookseller I am so lucky to be able to attend events where I actually get to meet the authors and illustrators of the books I love. This weekend I attended the annual fall Authors Feast and Trade Show which the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association (SCIBA) organizes each year. I was able to network with publishers, other booksellers, teachers, and librarians. I had dinner with Pseudonymous Bosch (The Name of This Book Is Secret) on my right and Jon Klassen ( I Want My Hat Back, The Dark) on my left. At breakfast on Saturday I enjoyed presentations from Brian Floca (Locomotive), Gris Grimly (Frankenstein), Richard Peck (The Mouse with the Question Mark Tail) and David Shannon (Bugs in My Hair) where they talked about their books and their art and even a few personal details.
And I picked up dozens of advanced reading copies (ARCs) and lots of books signed by the authors & illustrators! I returned home Saturday invigorated and on fire to share these books with my book club members and social media friends!
Being a children's book collector, a bookseller and former "librarian" children's books are a major part of my life and I think about them and about literacy often. Inspiration usually comes to me while I'm in the shower and is promptly washed down the drain. I'm finally going to try to write down some of these pearls and share them!
