As a bookseller working in a Children's bookstore I usually sold books to adults for their children. I found that in describing a book to that adult if it sounded too sad, or scary, or dangerous, or gruesome they would immediately turn to something else less dark. In working directly with kids I found that they were attracted to the darkness, the horror, the terror, the shocking bloody stories, the bizarre, the gruesome, and the macabre. They wanted stories of creepy dolls and marionettes, zombie apocalypses, vengeful ghosts, shape-shifters, ghouls, goblins, all manner of monsters. I've put together here a list of 18 recent publications that will satisfy any 8 to 12-year old's craving for scary.
Being a children's book collector, a bookseller and former "librarian" children's books are a major part of my life and I think about them and about literacy often. Inspiration usually comes to me while I'm in the shower and is promptly washed down the drain. I'm finally going to try to write down some of these pearls and share them!
