The Rabbit Readers Children's Book Club has been providing it's members with quality children's literature for more than 10 years!
I first began managing this book club as the Give a Gift monthly book club back in 1996 when I was with the White Rabbit Children's Bookstore in La Jolla, California. When the store was closed in 2003 I decided to continue the book club on my own because I knew that my customers depended on me and I didn't want to let them down. Thus the Rabbit readers Children's Book Club was born. It's been 10 years now and some of those same customers still have children enrolled in the book club! Some of my former members have already graduated from college!
Since the early 1980's I have been an avid children's book collector. I have thousands of children's books, most of which are signed by the authors and illustrators. I look at it like an art collection. Each picture book has an average of 32 pages and usually pictures on both pages. With more than 2,000 titles in my collection, I would say I have a gallery of about 64,000 works of art by some very distinguished artists!
While working in the bookstore, I was asked by the principal of a charter school in the San Diego school district to create a school library. This was a school with Kindergarten through 8th grade so I had to consider all levels of reading and interests of children from age 5 to 14. I bought the book cases, put them together, ordered about 4,000 books and opened for business. When the bookstore closed I became their librarian. Not a "real librarian" by education, but fully qualified to help the students to find the books they want and need. I did this for 5 years and went from managing one library for one school to 3 libraries for 5 schools.
In 2008, I retired from that position and took a position as a Library Services Representative for Mrs. Nelson's Library Services. I visited schools throughout the County of San Diego helping the librarians, teachers and principles to order books for their schools. After about 18 months I decided to retire from that to concentrate on my grandchildren and my Rabbit Readers Children's Book Club.
How am I qualified to choose books for your children? My experience in the bookstore has shown me what adults look for in a book for their children. As a librarian I saw first hand exactly what a child looks for in a book. And my library services experience has shown me what educators look for. As a collector I have a high standard of excellence in writing and in illustration that I apply to my book selections for my book club members. As a grandmother I know intimately what entertains and captivates children from newborn to age 18 from my experience with both my grandchildren and nieces and nephews. I research the books in bookstores, publisher catalogs & websites, read reviews and most of all I read lots of books. And finally all of my experience combined has taught me that most adults do not have the time, experience, or knowledge of the books being published today and need my help in choosing for their children.
Many of my customers value this service as a means to stay connected to long distance family members and would be lost without this service. Others just appreciate having an expert choose their books. But all will agree that nothing beats witnessing the looks of joyful anticipation when the mailman arrives carrying that special package!
